Newburgh to Hold Treecycling Party on Jan. 12

Newburgh, NY—The City of Newburgh has a new approach to an old problem getting rid of the Christmas tree after the holidays. This year, instead of hauling it out to the curb, recycle it at the second annual City of Newburgh Christmas Tree Recycling Party.

The event, sponsored by the Downing Park Planning Committee, the Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Shade Tree Commission, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Downing Park Greenhouses. In case of inclement weather, the snow date is Jan. 13. The entrance is on Carpenter Avenue near the South St. overpass and Gidney Avenue. Signs will direct you.

Trees must be bare of ornaments, lights and tinsel. No artificial trees will be accepted. Enjoy free cider and donuts in the Visitors Center at the Shelter House while you wait.

The DPW will chip recycled trees into mulch to nourish more than 100 street and park trees planted this year. Bring your own buckets or bags and take home some free mulch or chips. A three to four inch layer of chips and mulch is important to protect trees and shrubs from freezing temperatures and the alkaline effects of road salt.

For more information, call the City of Newburgh Visitors Center at (845) 565-5559. To find a Christmas tree recycling location in your area, visit Earth 911′s Treecycling page.
