Westchester County Sticks it to Residents Who Don’t Recycle

Newsday reports that Westchester County will be cracking down on recycling starting in 2008, marking garbage cans with colored stickers who fail to separate out recyclables.

The county has mailed 50,000 stickers to trash-collecting companies, and an initiative was passed in November allowing these companies to inspect trash bags for misplaced recyclables.

Violators will risk their trash not being collected starting next month, and collection companies who fail to separate out recyclables will face fines starting at $250.

Nearby New York City has considered having all trash be put in clear bags so they can be searched easily for recyclables. For more information on the value of recycling, visit Earth 911’s Recycling page.
