Earth911.com and Valvoline Partner to Recycle Used Motor Oil

Scottsdale, AZ—Valvoline, a division of Ashland Inc., has reinforced its concern for the proper disposal of program licensing partnership with Earth911.com, which will brand Valvoline motor oil products with the Earth911.com website and 1-800-CleanUp hotline to find recycling locations throughout the U.S. and Canada.

According to the U.S. EPA, over 40 percent of U.S. oil pollution comes from the improper disposal of used motor oil by “do-it-yourself” (DIY) auto mechanics. One gallon of improperly disposed motor oil can contaminate one million gallons of freshwater.

The partnership will focus on encouraging DIYers to reduce the amount of used motor oil not being recycled, with a call-to-action on thousands of Valvoline products.

DIYers throughout the country can find their closest used motor oil recycling opportunity through Earth911.com’s location-based search database of over 85,000 recycling centers and programs. The database will also provide information on recycling the Valvoline containers. The same information is available using the bilengual 1-800-CleanUp hotline.

“Used motor oil disposal is a key environmental issue, and Valvoline is at the forefront educating DIYers how to be responsible,” said Earth911.com President Jonathan Smith. “Earth911.com’s nationwide database provides simple solutions to this problem, and the support of companies like Valvoline help provide this service at no charge to consumers.”

Used motor oil can be reused or recycled through reconditioning, reprocessing, or re-refining. Two gallons of used motor oil can generate enough electricity to power the average home for one day, blow-dry a person’s hair at least 216 times, or watch television for 180 hours.

“Our support of Earth911.com is a small but important step as we all work to protect our water supply and encourage the recycling of motor oil,” said Rob Stravitz, Vice President of Global Brands for the Valvoline division of Ashland Inc.
