Lionsgate Announces Green DVD Packaging

Looking to buy some new DVDs for the summer? Starting June 3, independent studio Lionsgate will begin packaging its DVDs in recycled and recyclable materials.

Fittingly, the first such release will be season three of the TV show Weeds.

  • The DVD trays will be 100 percent recycled materials (approximately 500,000 recycled water bottles)
  • Paper will be 100 percent recycled fibers and recyclable
  • Manufacturing uses 1/10 of the energy of normal DVD packaging

Lionsgate will be announcing future environmentally-friendly releases throughout the year. You can also recycle the DVDs themselves using Earth 911′s recycling locator.

WRAP Director of Retail and Organics Programmes, Richard Swannel, said in a statement that this report: “demonstrates the positive environmental impact of lightweighting and the incorporation of recycled content. It will help inform the wine packaging and retail industries on the environmental impact of their packaging choices.”
