Bicycle Commuting on the Rise

From Herndon, Va. to Bismarck, ND people dismayed at the high cost of gas are dusting off their bikes to commute to work. According to the League of American Bicyclists, 18 million bicycles have been sold annually in the past few years, although only one quarter of one per cent of Americans ride a bike to work.

According to the League, which is sponsoring Bike-to-Work Week this week and Bike-to-Work Day on May 16, a record number of people will be pedaling this year.

The bike industry generates about $6 billion in annual sales, despite the scanty percentages of American bicycle commuters.

If you’re looking to buy a bicycle, consider buying used. Earth 911′s recycling locator provides locations that take in used bicycles for resale.
