Planet Green Launches Wednesday

The Discovery Channel’s new offering, Planet Green, launches Wednesday evening, according to the Associated Press. It replaces Discovery Home in 50 million cable and satellite subscriber households.

The channel’s management, although committed to a “green” message, is not going to offer educational programming. Instead, the new channel is committed to “eco-tainment.”

“Instead of scolding people not to waste paper by using juice boxes, the network will profile a person who built a business upon recycling them,” says its president, Eileen O’Neill. She doesn’t plan to be heavy-handed.

Beginning in August, Tommy Lee and Ludacris will star in “Battleground Earth,” a series of competitions between the rocker and rapper to determine who’s the greenest. HBO “Entourage” star Adrian Grenier is host of “Alter Eco,” where he and a team of experts show celebrities and ordinary people “the way to a hip green lifestyle.”

Another program, “Supper Club with Tom Bergeron,” brings a chef who cooks a “green meal” while special guests talk about what’s new in the environmental movement.

That’s really too bad that they are choosing to entertain before educating. Especially since they could possibly do them both at the same time. I wish we wouldn’t rely so much on the celebrities to lead our green examples. Of course rock stars and actors can afford to become the greenest of the green. Show me normal people going green, and how to inspire normal folk to green up, being normal myself.
    Peace!
