New York City Schools In Recycling Hot Seat

New York City officials urged the Department of Education Tuesday to improve NY1.

Various councilmen expressed frustration that there are only 372 recycling coordinators in the city’s 1,500 schools. City school official Jeffery Shear committed to “pump up the…number of recycling coordinators because it needs to be higher than it is now,” reported NY1.

The school system is huge, employing about 130,000 and educating about 1.1 million children. One Brooklyn city councilman said only 10 percent of the 50,000 tons of garbage generated by the schools each year is recycled.

Many schools lack an adequate number of bins, making recycling difficult. The recycling coordinator must talk to the Department of Education in order to obtain more, which is one of the reasons why more coordinators are needed.
