Fines for Non-recyclers in MA

In an effort to boost recycling efforts in Milford, Massachusetts, residents who do not participate in the mandatory curbside program will be fined, reports the Milford Daily News.

Two warning lettes will be sent before fines are imposed. Reluctant residents will pay $25 per wasted trip of the city’s pickup services.

The benefits of recycling are both environmental and economical in Milford. Trash costs $67.79 per ton at the incinerator, but there is no charge for the disposal of recycled materials. The town already saves about $100,000 each year by recycling close to 1,500 tons. Public Health Director Paul Mazzuchelli told the Daily he hopes to increase recycling by 500 tons in the coming fiscal year.
