ISO Creates Recycling Standard for Plastics

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has announced a new standard, ISO 15270, which will affect how plastic waste is recovered and recycled.

The plastic industry can use the standard to further develop a market for recovered plastics. While there are seven different types of plastic resin that can be recycled, the current market dictates that #1 (PETE) and #2 (HDPE) plastic are more widely accepted by recycling programs.

ISO 15270 will also address quality requirements in plastic recovery and recycling, such as minimizing environmental impact and providing access to a viable collection system. You can find a viable collection system to recycle any of your plastics using Earth 911.

There is already an entire family of ISO standards (ISO 14000) that relate to environmental impact. Many companies that recycle electronics are ISO 14001 certified to ensure that these components will be properly disposed.
