Going Green at the Fair in Marion County, OR

Organizers of the Marion County Fair in Oregon, which runs from today to July 13, are making efforts to lessen the environmental impact of the event, reports the Statesman Journal.

Changes include:

  • Eliminating the half-inch thick fair book which is normally distributed to thousands of residents (information is now posted online)
  • Placing mixed paper recycling bins throughout the grounds
  • Donating the leftover cooking oil from the corn dog and funnel cake vendors to a local farm for conversion to biodiesel
  • Featuring a “Living Green” display that highlights local companies and agencies working on sustainability

The changes will have both environmental and economic benefits. Organizer Dean Sweeney hopes the changes with save as much as 15 percent of the fair’s waste expenses.

Additional green efforts will be made at next year’s fair, such as offsetting and recycling food waste for compost.
