Iowa City Event Aims to Divert Items From Landfill

A giant garage sale hosted by local non-profit organizations will allow Iowa City citizens to get killer deals on used merchandise, reports the Press-Citizen.

“Rummage in the Ramp” is timed to coincide with the ending of the majority of Iowa City’s lease agreements in hopes to keep renters’ unwanted furniture off the curb. People can bring in items to be donated and sold to the public for under 20 dollars. The money goes to the non-profit organizations that staff the event.

Last year, nearly 20 tons of items were diverted from the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, and nearly 4,000 dollars was raised for local non-profits.

The following items, in good condition, are accepted:

  • Beds, box springs, mattresses and frames
  • Books
  • Clean, wearable clothing
  • Usable furniture
  • Kitchen items
  • Household items
  • Non-perishable food items
  • Small appliances in good working condition
  • Other electronics (5 dollar donation charge)

Sales of donated items will be held daily, from 5 to 8 p.m. July 24 through August 1, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 2 at the Chauncey Swan parking ramp. Items may be dropped off from noon to 8 p.m. daily, or 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 26.
