Racing to Recycle at the Michigan International Speedway

The Michigan International Speedway (MIS) draws quite a crowd and creates quite a trash load.

MIS recently teamed up with Coca-Cola Co. to begin a new year-round recycling program, according to Nascar. Bins were placed throughout the speedway’s 1,400 acre property to make recycling convenient. The first major event, the Sprint Cup Series LifeLock 400 in June, resulted in 15.3 tons of plastic, cardboard and aluminum being collected and sent to a recycling facility.

Recycling also happens when there are no fans filling the seats. An office recycling program encourages employees to recycle plastics.

Also, a great deal of recyclable material is generated by construction. More than 765 tons of construction material has been recycled since the program began. Used steel from Nazareth Speedway and Pikes Peak International Raceway will be utilized to build new grandstand seating at MIS.
