Seattle City Council Passes 20 Cent Plastic Bag Fee Law
It’s official: the much-debated Seattle based law imposing a 20-cent fee per Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
The law will go into effect in January, and applies to all grocery, drug and convenience stores. The city will soon launch a campaign encouraging the use of cloth bags.
“No one has to pay the fee, no one,” City Council President Richard Conlin told the Post-Intelligencer.
The fee is expected to cut the number of plastic bags used per year in half.
In a related action, the City Council also banned plastic foam food and drink containers.
