Green Coffee Cups Save Shop Money

The biodegradable coffee cups used at Outback Java Shacks in northern Montana are not only more eco-friendly than traditional cups, they are also more economical, according to The Daily InterLake.

The Shacks use a single cup instead of a cup and java jacket like most coffee shops. Sturdy corrugated paper surrounds the smooth interior of the cup, creating a layer of insulation while also separating the consumer’s hand from the heat.

Owner Nigle Cini spends a penny less per biodegradable cup than he would for a traditional cup and java jacket. He imports directly from the manufacturer in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The cups do have a toxicity level of 7 percent (from the waterproofing material), but are an improvement of the normal 25 percent of traditional cups. They are easily recycled or composted.

Is your local coffee shop using compostable cups? If so, make sure and do your part, and compost them! Learn the basics of composting with Earth911.
