ConAgra Uses Recycled Plastic in Meal Tray Design

ConAgra Foods, producer of frozen meals including Healthy Choice and Marie Callender’s, has started using 30 to 40 percent recycled plastic for its trays, which could divert eight million pounds of plastics from landfills.

ConAgra has partnered with Associated Packaging Technologies to find clean recycled plastic that is safe to come into contact with food. The new packaging began in June and should be on store shelves now.

The plastic in question is Polyethylene terephthalate (PETE), commonly used for plastic bottles. ConAgra estimates it will use the equivalent of 128 million plastic bottles as recycled content in packaging each year.
