Canadian Survey Claims 58 Percent of Residents Recycle

A new survey out of Canada reports that 58 percent of Canadians recycle and manage their waste properly. Two different Canadian provinces, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, reported participation rates of 70 percent.
The Angus Reid Strategies-conducted survey asked 1,007 Canadians their thoughts on numerous environmental topics, including air quality and cleanliness of shorelines. Over 49 percent believed that plastic bags are the most common piece of trash on shorelines, followed by 22 percent thinking it was plastic bottles.
In the U.S., recycling participation is usually shown as a percentage of waste that is recycled instead of what percentage of residents participate. The U.S. EPA reports that 32 percent of waste was recycled in the U.S. in 2005.
