Site Lets Users Calculate Green Savings
CheckFree Corporation has launched an educational site called eBillPlace, which allows consumers to determine how much they can reduce their environmental impact when they receive and pay bills online.
A consumer’s “green savings” are determined by how many bills he or she receives a month and how many are paid by mail. The savings are divided into 3 categories: pounds of paper saved, gallons of wastewater saved and pounds of greenhouse gases avoided. The calculator also displays equivalents of the greenhouse gases saved, for example: 146 miles not driven in your car, or two trees planted.
According to the site, if every American household went paper-free, it could:
- Reduce solid waste in U.S. landfills by more than 800,000 tons a year
- Save an estimated 18.5 million trees a year
For those bills which you do receive paper copies, make sure to recycle your paper with Earth911.
