Dell to Release Laptops With LED Displays

Dell recently unveiled plans to transition all of its new laptops to light-emitting diode (LED) displays within the next 12 months.

“As an industry, we can shape the future of green innovation and significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with mobile computing,” said Jeff Clarke, senior vice president of Dell Product Group. “Dell is committed to leading the transition to energy-efficient LED technology.”

LED displays are mercury-free and highly recyclable, as well as enable significant energy savings in comparison to the current cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) technology. A 15-inch LED display consumes an average of 43 percent less power at maximum brightness.

With the first laptops equipped with LED displays released in December, Dell hopes for at least 80 percent of its total laptop volume to come equipped with LED displays as a standard feature by the end of 2009 and 100 percent by 2010.
