CA Inland Colleges Focus on Recycling

Several inland colleges in Southern California are working to increase recycling rates and the use of recycled materials, reports the Press-Enterprise.

At the University of Redlands, one student housing building, Merriam Hall, uses recycled carpet to cover the floors. The couches and chairs are also made of recycled or eco-friendly materials.

University of California, Riverside, has the goal to meet standards set by a national green building certification program. Points are given for such things as using recycled construction materials and building environmentally friendly structures on brown fields, often former industrial sites.

All the colleges are putting an increased focus on recycling. At Loma Linda, about 6,000 cans and wood pallets.

In addition to recycling efforts, many colleges are also making moves to conserve water and energy. Cal State San Bernardino saves $1 million a year in energy bills with its energy, water and waste water-saving program which began in 2005.

The green move has been generated both by students and administrators. The programs often save money and many are required to meet state mandates.
