Largest Financial Convention in U.S. to Get Green Makeover

The Association for Financial Professsionals (AFP) is launching a new program at its annual conference in Los Angeles, Calif., next week.

Beyond discussing the critical issues surrounding the banking and credit markets, the largest gathering of treasury and finance professionals from companies such as GE, Goldman Sachs, Google and Bank of America will also serve to announce “AFPAware,” a comprehensive initiative supporting a more socially and environmentally conscious environment at the conference.

Among its initiatives, AFPAware will incorporate the following green changes to its conference:

  • Printing marketing materials (e.g. flyers, brochures and signage) on recycled, chlorine-free paper with soy-based inks.
  • Hosting the conference at The Los Angeles Convention Center, which has a comprehensive recycling program and is the largest solar energy-generating convention center in North America.
  • Utilizing reusable dishware, flatware and linens and incorporating organic, locally grown produce. Excess food will be donated to a local homeless shelter, The Midnight Mission. Event participants will also serve Sunday lunch at the Midnight Mission.
  • Housing attendees at hotels with recycling programs, as well as energy and harmful chemical reduction programs.

According to Meeting Strategies Worldwide, a typical five day conference with 2,500 attendees (the AFP Conference will host over 6,500) uses 62,500 plates; 87,500 napkins; 75,000 glasses; and 90,000 cans or bottles.
