EPA Launches Lead Poisoning Prevention Week

The theme of this year’s National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is “Let’s Wipe Out Lead Poisoning—Renovate Right!” to promote the proper handling of renovations that involve lead-based paint.

The U.S. EPA created an entire site on lead-safe renovations, in coordination with a rule that will take effect in 2010 requiring contractors to be certified to work on projects with lead-based paint to further prevent lead contamination. Your local community may be holding educational events about lead contamination this week.

Also, keep in mind that lead can be found in other places besides paint. The average CRT computer monitor or television contains four to eight pounds of lead, which can be exposed if you don’t properly dispose of electronics. Use Earth911 to recycle products containing lead.
