First Plant To Recycle Transformer Oil Opens in Ohio
The city of Canton, Ohio now boasts the country’s first plant to recycle transformer oil. Hydrodec’s new facility, which has the capacity to process 8 million gallons of oil per year, opened Oct. 7.
The company’s secret formula takes dirty oil and cleans 99 percent of the liquid, a process which may be repeated over and over again.
“We’re taking used transformer oil that’s historically been burned as fuel when it no longer meets industry specifications, and we’re taking that oil and we’re recycling that through our refinery process and putting it back into service,” said John Cowan, Hydrodec’s North American President.
Canton was chosen as the site for the plant largely because of its convenient location. The city is within 500 miles of the largest utility users in the U.S. The plant was built next to a rail line, making it easy to receive bulk shipments of dirty oil from various locations.
