New Cowboys Stadium to Feature Green Initiatives

The new $1.1 billion Dallas Cowboys stadium is set to become the first sports venue to participate in the U.S. EPA’s National Environmental Performance Track program

The Cowboys’ initiatives include annual goals, such as:

  • Reducing solid waste by 25 percent
  • Reducing energy use by 20 percent
  • Reducing water consumption by one million gallons
  • Using native trees and plants
  • Purchasing renewable energy
  • Using recycled plastic in seats and the playing field

The stadium’s contractor, Manhattan Construction, will also recycle 90 percent of its waste.

“We should use [the Cowboys'] visibility to talk about how we should improve the environment,” said Jerry Jones, owner of the Cowboys.

The stadium is set to be completed next year, joining over 500 other Performance Track facilities, such as Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Another stipulation of the Performance Track program is that members must continue setting goals for increasing energy efficiency and reducing waste and pollution.
