Environmental CFL are a very negative step, despite the energy savings they present a major environmental disaster waiting to happen when come to disposal. Not to mention the negative effects of using the low end CFL and the high ecposure to UV radiation

"If you print three pages a day, that’s almost three $8 reams of paper used in a year."

I don't know where you are buying reams of paper for $8 each, as I don't pay more than $3 per ream and less if I buy it in bulk. The seller is "reaming" you with a high price on paper. You can buy paper with a higher content of recycled paper product in it that is nearly as bright as paper that does not. Also, recycle the paper that you do use. Children can color on the blank side or you can cut a page into quarters and use it as scratch paper. Shredded paper can be used as a packing material for items that are shipped or it can go into a compost bin.

awesome!!! i'll get my parents to try some of this stuff. we've already gone to clfs, they're pretty unpredictable. sometimes they don't last too long, like the one we installed outside with a cover, but most of the time they last a long time. unless they accidentally get smashed, but that's another story. we're kinda using rechargeable batteries, the only problem is that they need to keep getting recharged and keep getting lost, courtesy of my siblings. my family is pretty much eco-friendly, since we already do almost all the things on this list. we can't exactly use the public transportation one (except for school) cuz we live in a remote cul-de-sac. oh well. anyone know where i can find a battery recycling place in charlotte and how to keep my siblings from losing our batteries?

Light Green: I don't understand. Why do I get long life from my CFL's, if yours don't last? I installed CFL Spirals in every lamp and suitable fixture in my home over the last 2 1/2 years and have only replaced one or two (hey, they are mass produced; some are going to have very short lives and others will last longer than the 8 to 10 years advertised; several incandescents I had needed replacement early, even after only intermittent). Also, the CFL's I used were "builder's specials" bought in large packages of 6 or 8 at a large building supply warehouse store. My only complaint about them is that they take a while to warm up and burn brightly. You should really reconsider using them again. Maybe you can purchase the better brand name bulbs and get better resulte while still saving money (and helping the environment). I'm going to upgrade when my oldies burn out.
PS Don't forget to recycle them when they finally die.

With regard to rechargeable battery usage, there are uses for which rechargeables are not an option, most notably smoke detectors. I'm not going to get into the science of why this is true as a quick google search will produce plenty of results. It's also noteworthy that traditional battery rechargers are available at stores like K-mart, Walmart, etc. A traditional battery can be recharged using these systems approximately 6 times.

The CFLs are a total bust! I have gone back to plain light bulbs after dropping more than a hundred dollars on CFL lighting. They simply do not perform as advertised. I got a month out of one bulb that was used infrequently and my normal bulbs are cheaper too. I put them in side by side comparisons and guess what...CFL bulbs are a scam. I can afford the pennies a year normal light bulbs cost. It's the hundreds that go into CFLs that I cannot bear.

Sadly less green in my wallet

For all you crocheters out there. You can actually crochet stuff with all those plastic grocery bags. I just used up dozens upon dozens of them and made myself a reusable grocery bag. If your looking for instructions or patterns just google the term "plastic crochet".

I'm glad to see articles showing that going green saves money. Most people assume that going is an expense but making these small changes does add up to lots of savings. The best part is that you'll be doing your part to help the planet

As a birder, I would like to encourage everyone to plant native plants in their yard. Get rid of as much lawn as possible, because it wastes water, and energy to mow, edge and blow leaves off. Pesticides, herbicides and the pollutants from Lawn mowers are bad for the environment as well as people and wildlife. Encourage Homeowner Associations to promote "Freedom Yards".
