New York Joins Reconnect Network

As recently reported on Earth911.com, Dell and Goodwill have joined forces to create Reconnect, a free computer recycling service.  Recently, New York was added as the fourth statewide program offered through Reconnect.

Any brand of computer equipment, in any condition, is accepted at the 31 recently added drop-off sites in New York City and eastern New York, as well as other locations in western New York.

“Goodwill is very pleased to partner with Dell to expand Reconnect to New York,” said Rex Davidson, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey. ” We are committed to helping provide work for persons with disabilities, who will be employed to accept, sort and prepare the donated computers for recycling. The program has the added benefit of helping divert hazardous materials contained in unwanted computer equipment from our communities.

Through the Reconnect site, consumers can find locations within New York, and across the nation, where computer and computer accessories are collected. Through its work, Reconnect hopes to:

  • Divert 1.65 million pounds of used computers and computer equipment from landfills
  • Provide consumer education on the importance of environmentally-responsible computer disposal
  • Support Goodwill’s job training and creation programs

After the e-waste is collected, the materials will be recycled and re-marketed by Dell’s recycling partner. Be sure to remove all of your personal data from your computers, as this service is not provided for you.

In 2007, Dell collected 102 million pounds of IT equipment from customers. With today’s launch, Reconnect offers 606 drop-off locations for free computer recycling across the nation.
