Green Nightclub Hits NYC Scene

Greenhouse, a new club in New York City, is looking to acheive LEED-certification, according to the New York Times.

The two-story, 6,000 square-foot Manhattan club features resource-efficient features such as:

  • High-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning
  • LED lighting system, using a little over three percent of the energy of a standard system
  • All furnishings (from couches to coasters) are recycled or recyclable
  • Waterless urinals and low-flow sinks
  • Purchasing wind power credits to offset all energy use
  • All wood used is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council

“People who view the night club industry as typically vain and hedonistic and self-interested — we wanted them to see that such an industry can take on a moral initiative like sustainability,” said Daniel Husserl,  president of Natural Progression, who worked with Bluarch Architects (the club’s designer) to develop the sustainability solutions for the club.

“There are lot of synergies and best practices that we can work out,” said Mike Zuckerman, director of sustainability for Temple Nightclub, a green club in San Francisco. “Internally we can reduce our footprint, but we can also share those best practices with our competitors to make a larger impact and possibly influence municipal programs.”

The club also sells organic juices and alcohol. Standard drinks are available as well, in case partygoers aren’t ready to change their favorite cocktails.
