AF&PA Offers $2K to Successful Paper Recycling Programs

The American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) Recycling Awards program is looking for entries for its 2009 contest. The AF&PA Recycling Awards recognize outstanding paper recycling efforts through successful programs in four categories:

  • Office – The AF&PA Business Leadership Recycling Award recognizes a successful workplace paper recycling program.
  • Community – The AF&PA Community Recycling Award recognizes a successful community paper recycling program.
  • Higher Learning – The AF&PA College/University Recycling Award recognizes the implementation of a paper recycling program in an institution of higher learning.
  • Schools – The AF&PA School Recycling Award recognizes a kindergarten through high school institution that hosts a successful paper recycling program.

AF&PA Recycling Award winners will be flown to New York City to receive a $2,000 cash prize and framed original artwork during AF&PA’s 132nd Paper Week. The entry deadline is Wednesday, February 4, 2009.

The awards are part of the industry’s efforts to increase paper recovery. Thanks to everyday recycling, 56 percent (54.3 million tons) of the paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling in 2007. The paper recycling industry hopes to set a new record of a 60 percent recovery rate by 2012.

Previous winners of the AF&PA Recycling Awards include Hewlett-Packard, Harvard University, the University of Oregon and the City of Seattle.
