‘Discover’ the New Biodegradable Credit Card
Discover Financial Services announced the release of the first biodegradable Discover® Card, the only U.S. biodegradable consumer credit card currently available.
Made of biodegradable PVC, 99 percent of the card plastic can be safely absorbed when exposed to landfill conditions. Fully degrading within five years, the card plastic can break down in soil, water, compost – wherever microorganisms are present.
“The biodegradable Discover Card is another way for environmentally conscious consumers to do their part to help protect our planet,” said Kelly Tufts, director of marketing planning and strategy at Discover Financial Services.
Another easy way to green your credit card is by enrolling in paperless statements, regardless of your provider. In 2008, Discover Card sent 14 million paperless statements, saving an estimated 4.6 million pounds of paper.

I like and appreciate Discover Card’s initiative on becoming greener by using a biodegradable card. This eliminates the problem of sending cards with numbers on them to facilities that recycle them.
The only thing that could better Discover’s initiative is that they include an option of holding off a new card after a cardholder decides what they want their next card to be. What I mean is that card holders can choose to pick this biodegradable Discover Card and have this selection on file. Instead of getting the card right after they choose it, the information is kept on file until their current card expires. In my opinion, there is no point throwing away a card that has already been made for its purpose, just to get another card.
