8 Ways to Green Your Job Search

This story is part of Earth911’s “Green Eight” series, where we showcase eight ways to green your life in various areas.

There’s an old adage that finding a job is a full-time job. This is especially true in times when jobs are in short supply. However, getting the perfect gig doesn’t mean a full-time impact on the environment:

1. Network Online

Believe it or not, the entire job search process can be done without printing a single piece of paper or mailing countless cover letters. In addition to posting your resume through online job sites like Monster.com, consider the following:

  • Use email to send your information to HR departments and networking partners
  • Post and send a video resume to show off your interview skills ahead of time
  • Create an online portfolio of your work if related to art, graphics or photography

2. Head to the Library

There are lots of books out there to guide your job search. Most of them are available to check-out at your public library instead of purchasing at the book store. You’ll also find that research is important to finding the right job, and in some cases the library provides more in-depth information at your fingertips than the Internet. If you have access, the library at your local college provides even more resources (such as LexisNexis).

3. Recycle Business Cards

If you’re an active networker, you’ll likely end up with a stack of business cards during your search. Once you’ve imported them to your address book, toss these cards in the recycling bin with the rest of your paper. If you’re considering printing cards for the networking process, investigate recycled content paper and soy-based ink to reduce your impact.

4. Work in the Environment

What better way to help the environment than by getting a green job? Fields like renewable energy and waste management are growing with opportunities, and will often utilize the same job skills you already have. TreeHugger maintains and updates a list of green jobs available throughout the country.

5. Plan Interviews by Area

Obviously, you’re going to go on interviews when it’s convenient for the potential employer. But if given the choice, schedule several interviews per day instead of spreading them out to cut down your commute. You can also save carbon emissions (and parking fees) by taking public transportation to your interviews instead of driving.

6. Wetclean Your Professional Attire

Interviews are a good time to bring out your jackets, ties, fancy skirts and other professional clothing. This may mean a trip to the cleaners so you make a spot-free first impression. Investigate wetcleaning to get your clothes clean without the use of chemicals and toxins used in drycleaning.

7. Research Your Green Charities

Many larger companies will get involved with non-profit organizations to improve their community reputation, including environmental organizations. If you have a dream company, find out what charities it supports and volunteer your time with these organizations.

You’ll be helping the environment and could easily develop a relationship with your next boss at the same time. Be sure to check board memberships, since members often list which company they work for.

8. Send a Green Follow-up Gift

One of the best ways to be memorable after a first interview is to send a thank you note or gift. Instead of opting for something wrapped in plastic packaging, consider a sustainable gift such as a bamboo plant (it also denotes good luck). Choose gifts that include words like “organic,” “fair trade” and “recycled content,” and your eco-friendliness should be appreciated.
