Shaw’s Supermarket Incentivizes Reusable Bag Use

Purchasing a bag like this could help an environmental organization in your state.

For New Englanders still in the “paper or plastic” mindset, Shaw’s Supermarkets are making donations to non-profit organizations that help protect the planet for each reusable bag purchased at its stores.

One such example is in Connecticut, where the purchase of a reusable polar bear bag for $1.50 results in a 10-cent donation to the Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration. Shaw’s has partnered with different organizations in other New England states.

Reusable bags not only prevent the waste associated with paper and plastic bags —plastic bags are frequently one of the top forms of marine debris because they are light enough to blow out of landfills into water— but many are also made of recycled plastic.

The Daily Green has proclaimed reusable bags as “all the rage” this year, comparing their impact to compact fluorescent lamps in 2007. Many of the same grociers who sell reusable bags will accept your old paper and plastic bags for recycling as well.

The user named “clear perspective” is acting on behalf of a plastic bag company and posting that link everywhere on the Net. The truth about plastic bags is that they’re a poor use of a very valuable resource (oil) which we need to create good things like solar panels.
