This is a great article and very helpful. I have been storing batteries and paint cans in a big metal box outside, now I know where I can dispose them. Near where I live, there are recycling centers but there's alot of things they won't accept. It's not about money; it's all about recyling. These companies should at least give addresses or names of recyling businesses who will recyle their goods.

Repurpose materials from within your home. My husband and I are about to undertake a major renovation to our home. The kitchen cabinets need to go, but I'm going to be using them in my childrens' playroom for toy storage, in my art studio for supply storage and in the basement for utility storage. The cupboards are in slight disrepair for the kitchen, but using them in places that aren't used heavily daily will mean we don't have to purchase items for these areas, too, and the cupboards are saved from the landfil. Plus, with the extra materials used in adding on a family room, we plan to use them for a small garden shed. Kill two birds w/ one stone!
