I like the idea behind 'sensible', but I think we almost need a made-up word that pulls into it all of the meanings we need. As to the coolness aspect of being green, I'd say it will be giving way to sensibility and utility. For instance, I started with some really hip canvas bags, but they were always in the trunk! So there I was, taking plastic again. So I got some "less cool" bags, with very high utility (you can carry 5 of them in your purse - http://www.breezybags.com). I mentioned these before, but I'm sold because of the utility value. The same is true with data centers: companies are not "going green" to be cool. They are doing it because it is effective (saves money on electricity and cooling). And too bad that they can't make enough Tesla cars for the current demand! Only the rich and famous are getting them (supposed to be ramping up production, though).

I'm delighted that Green is Cool and finally catching on. We were first "sensitized" during the gasoline crisis in the '70's, when folks were first talking about the Greening of America. Nothing much happened after that and the electric car was "killed" by GM in favor of the Hummer. In spite of that, we got EcoVillage at Ithaca up and running in the '90's and since 2000 we've been living in a solar house in Civano in Tucson with 2.5kW of PV's on our garage roof, 51 cfl's, a solar powered swamp cooler, rainwater harvesting (800 gal), composting, recycling, cloth shopping bags, and on our second hybrid (Civic), etc. At times we felt it might all be for naught and we were just wasting our time and money on some foolish pipe dream. It was a very lonely feeling. It feels so wonderful to know that our instincts long ago may have been right and people are taking climate change and conservation and clean, fossil-fuel free energy seriously. Let's hope that under the new administration the "green-collar" economy will also catch on.

Perhaps the new word should be 'sensible' because it makes sense to reduce our carbon footprint. Great post!
