Recycling Demand Strong in Southern U.S.

The South will recycle again, at least according to Earth911.com search results from the year 2008. These results showed three of the four most popular regions for recycling searches lying below the Mason-Dixon line. The 16 states south of Kentucky were responsible for 43 percent of all recycling searches on Earth911.com during 2008.

The top “region” for recycling demand wasn’t located down south, as the Great Lakes states (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin) conducted 17.5 percent of the overall searches. The least active region was the Pacific Northwest (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington) with 3 percent.

All regions were broken down based on the EPA regional map, as many recycling initiatives and programs are planned on a regional basis to affect the states within that region.

The individual state with the highest recycling bragging rights for 2008 was California, which was responsible for 14 percent of the total recycling searches.
