Hi Pattie - when you check out my website, you will understand that I jumped for joy when I read your article. We are hosting what we believe to be the first ever "going green" cruise - Mrs. Green Goes to Sea this September. After we researched Cruise Lines, we selected Holland America because of their sustainability practices, their cutting edge pollution reduction technology and their commitment to constant improvement in all areas. In addition, we will have great, green informative culinary classes led by a James Beard Award Winner, Janos Wilder (he was using the word locavore before I even know what one was) and Laura Williamson, one of the top 18 female master somelleirs in the world. Laura specializes in biodynamic and organic wines from around the world. We will have other green presentations during sea days that making living green fun - my mantra.

I will be using quotes from your article for the guests who sign up because I know guests are the ones who produce the waste! Thanks for such a great article.

Hi Patty,

While, "a cruise is by no means the most eco-friendly vacation type", it's nice to read that the cruise lines are taking some actions to green-up their ships. Thanks for highlighting the importance of passengers communicating their green wishes/demands to the cruise staff and in post-trip follow-up the cruise line (cc the agent).

Take Care
