<description>Richie Sowa led the way to &quot;plastic bottle paradise&quot; a few years back when he created an inhabited island floating atop 250,000 empty plastic beverage bottles.

<description>One of the thoughts that stood out to me in this article is the comment about folks in non-Western areas of the world think of reusing as second nature. I commented on my own site, goinggreenaccidently.blogspot.com, that we, in America, used to be a society that reused on a regular basis. We also consumed less. Excessive purchasing and disposing of things simply because they weren&#039;t working was considered wrong. We FIXED things, not tossed and purchased. The dwindling numbers of handymen and repairmen is a sad commentary on America&#039;s descent into consumerism and a disposable mentality. I applaud any and all who buck this trend.

		<description>Jennifer,

Great article. Glad to see David is doing something of value with his banking fortune.

“Of the 200 billion pounds of plastic produced each year, researchers estimate that 10 percent ends up in the ocean, and a 2006 United Nations report calculated that each square mile of ocean contains 46,000 pieces of plastic.” Geez....how sad!

I have also read that Americans buy more bottled water than any other nation in the world, adding 29 billion water bottles a year to this very problem. Only 1 in 6 makes it to the recycling bin...the rest end up in landfills or a toxic trash on the land, rivers, lakes and the ocean.
