Award Recognizes Green Shipping Efforts
CSX Transportation presented its first ever Environment Awards to 19 different companies for their efforts to reduce carbon emissions by using shipping instead of trucks and highways.
Combined, the CSX customers who were recognized saved 1.2 million tons of carbon emissions in 2008. The recognition was both for companies who led their industry in emissions reduced and those who made the largest improvement over 2007.

“By honoring our customers with this award, we want to recognize the significant environmental benefit they provide to all of us in choosing to ship by rail,” says Michael J. Ward, Chairman and CEO, CSX. “Not only are their shipping practices good business, they’re contributing substantially to a cleaner environment.”
The honorees included large manufacturers, such as Exxon Mobil Co. and Tropicana Products, Inc., as well as transporters of everything from chemicals to paper to energy. Several waste haulers also made the list:
- Republic Services, Inc., which offers solid waste and recycling in 40 U.S. states and Puerto Rico
- EnviroSolutions Inc., which provides waste hauling and recycling in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic U.S.
Republic attributed the honor to the fact that environmental responsibility is an important part of its business. “As stewards of the environment, we ensure that our operations are conducted consistent with environmental best practices and that the quality of the environment is a critical factor in our decision-making,” says Republic CEO Jim O’Connor.

As an ExxonMobil employee, I can tell you that ExxonMobil shares the same concerns as people everywhere – we need to figure out how to provide the world with the energy it needs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. One of the best ways to do this is to lead by example. Whether it be from our shipping practices, or from our the $1.5 billion invested since 2004 to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ExxonMobil remains committed to employing practices that lessen our overall environmental footprint.
