Expanded N.Y. Mall Recycles 91 Percent of Construction Material
As construction of the new Destiny USA project in Syracuse, N.Y. wraps up, executives from the project have announced that 91 percent of construction debris has been diverted from landfills.
The new mall is an expansion of the existing Carousel Center mall, and Destiny USA is attempting to gain the U.S. Green Building Council’s top Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The LEED standard for construction debris recycling is 75 percent.

In addition to what the project is recycling, it’s also utilizing recycled content. The steel beams are 95 percent recycled steel, and the drywall is 96 percent recycled content.
Other “green” features of the project include:
- 60 roof drains capable of collecting 116,000 gallons of water for reuse in flushing toilets
- A paperless approach that resulted in 110,000 electronic documents and contractors viewing documents on laptops
- The dedication of 60 parking spaces for fuel-efficient vehicles
- The use of low volatile organic compound (VOC) emission adhesives, paints and carpeting systems
- Renewable energy accounting for 19 million kWh of electricity
The first faze of the project is set to open in late July, but there is no word on new tenants.
