Regarless of the economy, disposal of our waste is very cheap considering what we leave behind (non-biodegradable plastics, electronics, etc) and doesn't take into account the true or long-term costs (contaminated water, methane release impacting the climate, contamination of other countries who receive our electronic waste, etc). In addition to holding on to products longer, a charge reflecting the real cost might create demmand for more high quality products that last longer and/or can esily be repaired.

I didn't think about how consumers buying less will result in less waste produced. Plus, if people have to pay to dispose of things like appliances or electronics, they might hold on to them while money is tight.
