These PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) bottles are generally recommended to use for water as they have a very high environmental/carbon footprint in comparison to other methods such as in-line tap filters and water coolers.

For example water coolers result in 61% savings on carbon emissions. I would suggest that, if you must buy these small plastic bottles, to buy in larger orders using a larger, regulated water company who also offer pick-up and recycling services for the empty bottles. That will mean the bottles are disposed of in the most efficient and effective way, as it's being done by experts in the industry.

I'm presently on the layed off population and am looking for a way to make ends meet for my family, as well as a possible part of the solution to this growing problem of too much plastic everywhere!!! The area in which I reside has no recycle center for plastics that I know of. I would like to do something of value with this unplanned time off. If anyone knows of a place that buys plastic bottles, Please advise as my community is small ! I am located in Booneville Ms.

I'm a teacher at a public school in Baltimore City. My school sends approximately 1200 single use plastic milk bottles into the trash every day from the children's breakfast and lunch and I know other schools in the city do the same. I tried to contact Chris Todd from his 2009 post but couldn't get through. Please tell me there is a machine out there someplace that I could get a group of students to use that would tear up and wash these plastic bottles for storage of the material until we had a sufficient amount to sell to a recycler. I can't keep them as is because they will stink and draw rodents. Any ideas would be appreciated: dan32967@yahoo.com

I am a multiple store owner in Chicago of laundromats. I cannot tell you how many plastic containers we have in our waste containers. I would like to take on a weekly basis these huge bags of plastic. Where in Chicago do they recycle soap containers. Also do they pay you for the plastic.

Thank you

Hello! What a great article-thanks for the top ten list. I agree fully that Americans need to monitor their plastic use as well as their recycling. I think it'd be great if we could greatly reduce our reliance on the bottled water industry. We waste so many plastic bottles every day. Imagine the landfill space we could save if everyone used an eco-friendly reusable water bottle! The possibilities are endless.

Thanks again for the awesome blog.
