WasteExpo 2009 Launches in Las Vegas

This week, the Las Vegas Convention Center hosts the 2009 WasteExpo. For more than 40 years, WasteExpo has been the largest recycling and solid waste trade show in North America. The conference runs from June 8-10, and exhibits run from June 9-11. Last year’s show attracted more than 8,700 participants, an 11 percent increase from the 2007 WasteExpo.

Over the course of three days, the 2008 WasteExpo drew attendance from a wide variety of job titles—from sales managers to CEOs—and provided a place where attendees could research new products, network with peers, meet current suppliers, research new suppliers, discuss problems with vendors and make purchases.

The trade show brings together both the public and the private sectors involved in waste management, providing a one-stop, yearly forum for groups large and small to shop, sell and see the latest technologies that are helping to manage waste more efficiently and sustainably.

The conference also provides a place to inform industry stakeholders about the significant issues and trends affecting the solid waste and recycling industry.

Slated for this year’s expo are presentations, workshops, breakfast roundtables and lunch sessions where experts in the solid waste and recycling industry will lead discussions on topics pertaining to:

  • Green initiatives and social responsibility
  • Green technologies
  • E-waste legislation
  • Labor and employment
  • Recycling safety
  • New methods in food waste disposal

And to ensure that this year’s expo matches the solid waste and recycling industry’s commitment to sustainability, some of the green initiatives being taken by conference’s organizers include:

  • Exhibitor handbooks provided on CD-rom, with hard copies available to those who request them
  • Sending electronic surveys instead of paper mail surveys to obtain customer feedback
  • Utilization of available paperless technologies, including PDF tickets and e-mail registration and confirmation
  • Partnering with hotels that have easy access to public transportation routes to facilitate less car travel for attendees
  • Re-use of signs and banners from year-to-year
