If you would like to sign a petition asking Hewlett-Packard to reduce wasteful packaging, go to http://www.thepetitionsite.com/10/campaign-to-reduce-package-waste (a nonprofit, 3rd party site).

Biodegradable plastics are not the answer. Glass and other materials typically do not break down in a landfill either--nothing much does. Most landfills do NOT have methane capture and it can never be an efficient process. Compostable, bio-based plastics that are recycled or composted coupled with better sorting & recycling for fossil-based plastics make much more sense as a solution.

Interesting comments. I went to Wal-Mart the other day and was amazed by the number of items that was made of or contained plastic....everything there was made of or touched plastic. The problem won't be solved by using less plastic in our packages if that plastic isn't recycled or won't biodegrade. Most plastic will end up in a landfill and once it arrives there it does not biodegrade.....once it is in a landfill it will languish there for hundreds or thousands of years. I don't what plastic pollution to be my legacy to future generations. There is a better alternative...we should insist that all plastics be biodegradable. Plastics should be designed to biodegrade in a landfill.
A company in New Mexico, BioTec, has developed EcoPure, which is an additive for plastic that attracts plastic eating microbes.
We can and should improve recycling rates. We can do a better job of recycling more of the things we use. We should reuse everything as long as possible. Eventually, the things we use will end up in the trash...and once it’s there it should be designed to be biodegradable. Our landfills should be designed to enhance biodegradation and the capture of landfill gases which can be used to produce clean energy.
