Pizza Chain Rewarded for Organics Recycling
The Sustainability & Environmental Services Department for Plano, Texas awarded Cici’s Pizza with its Environmental Star of Excellence, thanks to a recycling program that has kept 55 tons of organic material out of landfills since May 2008.
Cici’s partnership with the City involves the collection of six, 96-gallon containers every other day. It’s a huge amount saved – participation of just one location the restaurant chain saves an estimated $2,000 annually in hauling fees.

In addition to food waste, Cici’s also provides paper and cardboard for Plano’s “Texas Pure” compost. This program takes all organic and yard waste dropped off at the Custer Road Facility and produces compost that is then sold to residents and businesses.
Cici’s is currently looking toward composting programs at other locations as well.
Across the U.S., many restaurants have investigated compost programs because organic material represents a significant portion of their waste stream.
Cici’s will receive its award at the Environmental Community Awards Celebration on Sept. 29. Another honoree is the Plano International Festival, which diverted more than 50 percent of its waste from landfills in 2008.
