White House Farmers Market Approved

Non-profit group Fresh Farm Markets was granted approval for an open-air farmers market near the Executive Mansion of the White House. The market will be open on Thursdays starting Sept. 17 and running thought Oct. 29.

In August, President Obama mentioned that he would like to find a way to get a farmers market near the White House.

“One of the things that we’re trying to do now is to figure out, can we get a little farmers market—outside of the White House,’’ Obama said at a health care forum. “That is a win-win situation.’’

“It gives D.C. more access to good, fresh food, but it also is this enormous potential revenue-maker for local farmers in the area,’’ he said. “Those kinds of connections can be made all throughout the country, and — and has to be part of how we think about health.’’

In March, First Lady Michelle Obama added a 1,100-square-foot organic garden to the White House landscape. The garden features 55 types of vegetables and promotes locally grown produce to educate Americans about eating healthy.

Co-founder of Fresh Farm Markets Bernadine Prince told The New York Times that she was unsure if the First Lady would attend opening day of the farmers market.
