My tip is for people wishing to decorate for the holidays without feeling guilty. Get pumpkins from a pumpkin farm to carve… it’s a great activity to do with your children. This is a way you can support your local farm. Then once you take them home you cut the tops and scoop all of the insides. Growing up my grandma would always have us separate the pumpkin seeds from the other pumpkin “guts” and then we would bake them in the oven with salt sprinkled over them. With the remaining “guts” you can find a good recipe for pumpkin pie and make use of what most people throw away. The carving process takes quite awhile and is a great way for families to spend time together. With the pumpkins seeds and pies you can have a snack and dessert to go along with whatever meal you have that day/night. The pumpkins can then be used to decorate your front yard until it comes time to dispose of them, they can then be composted. I’m not sure how many others have thought of doing just this but I wanted to throw the idea out there. It’s a good way to have fun with family or friends, get creative, have something yummy to eat, and use resources without wasting them. :)

My tip also pertains to the holidays. I use all of the leftover wrapping paper from Christmas (and sometimes birthdays) as a Iiner for the insides of my cupboars and dresser drawers. Some of it is obviously Christmas related but the wrapping paper serves a dual purpose and the only waste left over is the (fully recyclable) cardboard roll. If you pick the paper right it is really great way to save money and the environment!!

There are several green tips that I enjoy participating in daily. My favorite green tip, however, is to extend the lifespan of an existing product by donating it to someone else who will use it.
Clothes that no longer fit me (or my personality) I give either to friends or to the salvation army.
Books I have already read I donate to the library.
Furniture I have no use for any longer I put on craigslist to be picked up for free.
And so on and so forth.
The best thing about this type of eco activity is that it saves the planet from more waste being created or land filled, while helping others at the very same time. Especially in these tough times lately, most people can use a little helping hand. Giving something away that I no longer need or want to someone who actually does need it is an excellent way to say, “I care.”
So, my number #1 green tip: care.

Hi Everyone,
You all had excellent green suggestions, especially as it pertains to reusing valuable materials and helping those who are less fortunate – which we’re big fans of here! We’ve selected three winners from other submissions. To view their suggestions, check out our Facebook page and thank you so much for your creative tips!
Thanks,
Jenn

I take old cardboard tubes from empty wrapping paper and cut them into rings, about 2″ wide. Then you cut the ring. Use this ring to place on new wrapping paper tubes to keep the paper tight after opened. They sell plastic “bracelets”, but these are free, and recycled!!
