“You’ll save a small fortune if you opt for a hybrid over a larger sedan or sport-utility. Buy that Civic Hybrid instead of a 20-mpg Accord V-6 and you’ll see a savings of $656 a year on $1.50 gasoline.”

What La-La Land is MSN Money living in? How long ago did they write that, anyway. We'll never, EVER see $1.50/gal. gas again! Those days are LONG gone! Money really needs to update its figures.

Hybrids are an excellent choice, for those who can afford 'em. The same for organic foods. But, admittedly, there are many eco-friendly things those of us who aren't rich can do. For example, a few years back, I switched to compact fluorescent bulbs for my light fixtures that are used for more than 15 minutes at a time. I recycle my plastic grocery bags and soda cans. I haven't gotten to doing the farmers' market thing yet, though. I SHOULD, I suppose, but I haven't. I do what I can, that's all any of us can do.

mallory: "Each year, 75 millions lbs of PVC is dumped into landfills from plastic gift card waste (Plenty Magazine). "

Could you supply a more specific quote please? That seems very high.

Thank you so much for this article. I really enjoyed it. I loved how clear and thorough you expressed the importance of being highly aware and getting involved. I always try to recycle but there are so many limitations on what you can and can't recycle it can be so confusing!
I've never heard of earth 911 but I will def. use it for now on. I just read an awesome story yesterday about a couple who were passionate about recycling. They recycled 400,000 cans to raise money for their wedding. So cute, right? Thought it might make you smile what two people in love can do together for the environment. Check it out on Tonic. http://www.tonic.com/article/recycling-wedding-can-couple-tells-tonic-yes-we-can/

Thanks again. I feel so inspired!

I've got a great + super simple tip. The next time you're purchasing a gift card-- go for the electronic (and paperless option), an eGift card. Each year, 75 millions lbs of PVC is dumped into landfills from plastic gift card waste (Plenty Magazine). That's an astronomical amount of waste for something that can easily and conveniently be sent virtually. PVC is notoriously difficult to recycle and cannot be tossed into the recycling bin along side your other household items. You must send those pesky plastic cards to a PVC recycling plant, the only one I know of is EarthWorks. For a directory of retailers that offer an eGift card is http://www.giftzip.com ...it is the most extensive one I have found to date. Hope that helped. :)
