Garbage Moguls: Turning Trash Into Treasured Television

Back for season two, National Geographic channel's "Garbage Moguls" aims to do more than just turn doggy junk into doggy toys. TerraCycle wants to "upcycle" your mind. Photo: Terracycle

One man’s trash is another man’s … idea for a TV show?

Garbage Moguls, the show where one little company turns trash into “upcycled” consumer goods, is back for season two. Episodes 1, 2, 3 and 4 will air on the National Geographic channel on Saturday, Aug. 21 from 7:00-11 p.m.

If you watch, one of our PR friends will be happy, and you just might be entertained, so really it’s worth your time, or at least a few gigs on your DVR.

The show follows Ivy League dropout Tom Szaky and his company TerraCycle as they scrounge for discarded junk and turn it into hip, useful, unique and profitable products.

Episode two, which airs at 8 p.m., will track Tom and friends as they undertake a challenge by pet food giant Pedigree to create an entire line of upcycled pet products in just two weeks.

The team proceeds to craft leashes from dog food bags and doggy rain hats from dog food bags and octopus toys from dog food bags (Pedigree only makes dog food) and the team then pitches the goods to skeptical dog accessory bigwigs.

Next up is an episode called “Fishy Business” and then “All-Nighter.”

Watch or don’t, TerraCycle is a cool company with a conscious mission and a few worthwhile products. Check out their circuit board clipboard, cookie wrapper backpack and fire logs made from recycled wax and cardboard.

Somebody’s birthday is around the corner. Show them you care with a little bit of upcycled love.
