Pepsi to Install ‘Dream Machines’ in D.C. Area

It’s about to get a little easier to recycle in downtown Washington D.C.

Downtown DC will be dotted with 300 of PepsiCo's Dream Machine recycling cans.

PepsiCo will roll out more than 300 bottle and can recycling bins in partnership with the public works department and DowntownDC Business Improvement District, a Washington urban development group.

Officials hope the new cans will divert 1 million pounds of recyclables annually from downtown waste, with the goal of reaching a 45 percent diversion rate for city recyclables overall.

The program is part of Pepsi’s Dream Machine initiative that installs recycling bins and education kiosks with the goal of boosting the nation’s beverage container recycling rate from 34 to 50 percent by 2018. Operated by Greenopolis, the electronic kiosks reward consumers with redeemable points for every container recycled.

Pepsi says that the more cans and bottles recycled through the Dream Machines, the more the beverage giant will donate to Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities, a business training organization for post-9/11 vets.
