Google announced on Thursday that, pending German authority official approval, it will invest $5 million in a large solar plant in Brandenburg, Germany.

The Internet giant said the plant should provide power for 5,000 homes in the vicinity.

The decision comes on the heels of Germany’s nuclear power plant shut down in the wake of the Japan earthquake last month. Chancellor Angela Merkel has come out again nuclear energy, siding more in the favor of solar and wind power.

Google has already invested more than $100 million in the clean energy sector, including $38.8 million for wind farms in North Dakota and a critical leap into building a transmission backbone along the Mid-Atlantic coast to spur development of off-shore wind farms.
