Today is World Oceans Day, and you can make a difference from your chair right now, even if you don’t live near the coast. Here are three easy ways to get started.
Last year
we interviewed famed oceanographer and explorer Sylvia Earl on the most pervasive problems affecting the ocean, and litter was her top response. “In the past 20 years at least, I’ve not done any dive anywhere that I haven’t seen trash that humans have put there," she said.
It may sound strange, but donating your hair could help clean up future oil spills. San Francisco nonprofit
Matter of Trust collects human and pet hair to create booms that soak up oil. Currently, warehouses are full, but you can be placed on the email alert list when the need arrives again. Keep snipping and saving so you'll be ready on a moment's notice! Photo: Matter of Trust
We sat down with actor and ocean activist Ted Danson this year to find out how the average consumer can make a difference. Danson said joining Oceana.org is the first step in changing consumer behavior towards the oceans. “Educate yourself. Be brave. Order local, caught and fresh fish. Ninety percent of the world’s fishermen are artisanal, and catch 10 percent of the haul. We can return to doing things artisanally," he said. "Stop using plastic bags, and reduce the amount of plastic you use. Reduce your climate footprint.” Photo: Disneynature OCEANS
