Subodh Gupta, ‘Hungry Gods’

After reading that a soup kitchen serving many Muslim immigrants was putting pork in the soup, Indian artist Subodh Gupta responded by creating this awe-inspiring sculpture — and serving vegetarian soup nearby. Gupta used 1,000 kilograms of stainless steel utensils to make his culinary and spiritual point to the soup kitchen workers.
French billionaire Francois Pinault now owns the skull and displays it in his Palazzo Grassi by the Grand Canal in Venice. Another of Gupta’s pieces, “Melting Meteor,” sold for $80,000, the second highest selling price at Christie’s Green Auction: A Bid to Save the Earth.
